Food security

Even more than oil, food security is essential, and we are perfectly capable of providing that.
In the last 25 years funding for the agricultural industry has dropped.
For example the NT Department of Agriculture, has lost almost 50% of funding compared to 1996/97. This has the potential to cost us billions of dollars every year via the loss of food production, eg an outbreak of foot and mouth disease is estimated to coast us around $6 billion per year.
In the meantime farmers around the country are living up to their reputations and creating innovative and effective ways to sustainably and efficiently produce our food in the modern landscape. We need to support these developments; as well as assess the resilience of our internal food chains.

As they say:
The land looks after those who look after the land.
We must look after our farmers.
